Australian pearls are considered to be some of the finest in the world, there are two main types of Australian pearls: South Sea pearls and Broome pearls.
South Sea pearls are produced from molluscs of the Pinctada maxima species and are found in northern Australian waters. These pearls are noted for their large size, luster, and color ranging from white to cream to gold to pink.
Broome pearls, on the other hand, are produced by molluscs of the Pinctada margaritifera species, found in the Indian Ocean in Western Australia. These pearls are prized for their color and luster, ranging from white to pink, green, and blue.
Australian pearls have been traded since the 1800s, but in recent decades their production has been regulated to ensure the sustainability and protection of shellfish habitats.
